This July, Edge Hair Design and Spa celebrated five years in business as Canton’s premier hair color salon, and it’s easy to see why. Owner Patti Bower Chaney has been in the beauty industry for 30 years and a salon owner for 15 years, and under her leadership, Edge has flourished.
Patti grew up in Carrollton, Ohio and felt drawn to hair design and beauty from an early age. She started pre-college courses during high school before becoming interested in cosmetology. She quickly climbed to the top of her class, and her teacher helped her secure a coveted job opening at Gary’s Place. After eight years of service, she left Gary’s and explored work at several other salons. It wasn’t a good fit, however, and Patti decided the time had come to start her own salon. The decision led her to launch Edge Hair Design, and the business has been growing ever since.
What began five years ago as a small hair design studio has blossomed into a full-service, 4,000 square-foot spa. Today, Edge offers a multitude of top quality services, ranging from pedicures and spray tans to eyelash extensions and massage therapy. And for those interested in getting a new outfit to go with their chic look, Edge also has a clothing and accessories boutique.
“We started with six people, and now we have 33,” Patti said. “Two of the girls have been working with me for 14 years, and all of my staff stay up with the best and most advanced techniques for each service we offer.”
Education is one of Patti’s passions, and Edge Hair Design staff benefit from up close and personal sessions with some of the best and most well-known names in the industry each year. The salon partners exclusively with high-end Redken Elite Salon, and receives excellent education benefits for the team in
return – about $2,000 in free education every year per person.
“We have at least three to four in-house education sessions per year, and every year a selection of my staff attends an exclusive Redken symposium,” Patti said. “If we offer a service at our salon, you can be sure we do it right.”
Patti’s biggest passion is service, and she and her staff are actively involved in the community year-round. The salon focuses on helping local non-profit programs, and strives to always have a hand in a current community service effort.
Each winter, the staff fundraises for Refuge of Hope and donates hats, coats, scarves, socks, and other warm clothing items to the center, as well as to Canton City School children. This spring she took a team to Akron to do hair and makeup for children getting their photos taken for ‘Foster to Adopt.’ And most recently, staff attended a fundraising event for Pegasus farms, where they donated clothes, hair and makeup to children who put on a fashion show.
“It was one of the coolest things we’ve ever done,” she said. “The kids were beaming.”
As long as Edge Hair Design is open, Patti plans to continue growing and serving – both her customers and her community.
“I believe that in order to work here, you have to have a service heart, and my team feels the same way,” she said. “We work hard to make everyone feel comfortable when they come in, and we also work hard to help others around us.”
